Read MoreFrom his work on a critically-acclaimed Amazon Originals children’s series to a music video that’s won multiple awards on the film festival circuit, Houston Animator Brandon Ray’s recent animations with the Runaway Sun video Bad Bad Man tend to pair the childlike innocence of cut-out paper animation with darker contrasting themes. Ray explains, “Everything needed to be drawn by hand. Even digital painting programs are too clean, we needed a raw edge to all the animated characters, so every bit of artwork needed a hands on, real media touch.” Ray created each of the characters as functional paper puppets, cut them out, and filmed them on a chroma key background, compositing them in the digitally arranged hand-drawn environments. “I love the way Andrew’s lyrics make you identify and even sympathize with this guy who’s on a murderous rampage. By the end of the song, you’ve got enough empathy for this character that you’re cheering him on… or at least I am.” Catch the World Premiere of Bad Bad Man at Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company with Runaway Sun and Brandon Ray on March...

We’re documenting all of our new songs and the journey we take developing them, and we want you to join us every step of the way. Blue Heart Origin: Andrew was driving around in the van with no music on and started singing random phrases, settling on a slow burning blues sort of tune and coming across the words Blue Heart. What is the vocal melody going to be? Is this a verse or a chorus? Next, Andrew put down a basic beat using a drum pad app for iPad to send to the band. Then Andrew met up with Zero to brainstorm melody lines. They decided to use an organ tone to start: Andrew opted for a melody that can gave the vocal a little more emotion. He recorded an acoustic demo and uploaded it to Dropbox for the rest of the band to check out. Then the band met up to record the first 1-mic full-band demo. You can hear everyone trying to figure out what they want to play on the song, and a basic structure was born. Andrew wrote the second verse for Blue Heart and recorded another acoustic demo with the current structure. Andrew performed an acoustic version of the song live at The Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe in Galveston, TX What’s next for this one? Who knows! More on Blue Heart as the song develops! We’re documenting all of our new songs and the journey we take developing them, and we want you to join us every step of the way. Tiger Origin: Marshall sent us this guitar riff on dropbox, recorded on his phone: Then we did a 1-mic demo recording in our studio with Andrew on rhythm guitar, Marshall on drums, and Zero on keys with an organ tone. Andrew came up with the basic bridge, then Marshall and Zero added the buildup at the end of the bridge for sweetness, Marshall came up with the four big stops, and then we wrote a breakdown part and a droning part that sounded cool maybe for live shows. Andrew listened to the demo for a few days, then came in on different day and recorded the vocals/lyrics, beginning with an overdriven Shure SM 57 stage mic for recording. A week later, the full band met up to play the song for the first time, again with a 1-mic recording. Andrew had thought of a way to add the breakdown part and droning part written the previous week to the end of the song. Zero moved over from the keys to work out the bass lines, and Daniel came in on lead guitar and decided to try out playing with a glass slide that he found laying on the desk in the studio that day. You can hear the arrangement starting to develop. Andrew came in on a different day and overdubbed vocals, this time with an AKG Perception 820 condenser mic to try out a cleaner sound: Studio Day 1: We have stepped into the studio to begin recording Tiger. The band is really tight on the song, so we opted to record guitar, bass, and drums simultaneously, or what’s known as “Live” tracking. Andrew’s vocals and Daniel’s lead guitar work will be recorded separately. What you’re hearing now is the raw material, before the song is mixed. Behold, the final product, Tiger unleashed! Mixed and Mastered by Allan Davis, Produced by Kenny Matthew Gardner, Matthew Davis Buehrer, and Andrew Karnavas Tiger by Runaway Sun ...
